The Lions Are Back

Our wonderful lions are again standing guard over the Bridge of Lions. Given as a gift of Dr. Andrew Anderson (1839-1924)these Medici statues are copies of those found in the Loggia dei Land in Florence, Italy. The lions reference the name "Leon" in Ponce De Leon, which means "Lion" in Spanish. Begun in 1925 and completed in 1927 the Bridge of Lions is a bascule bridge that spans the Intracoastal Waterway. In 1999 the Department of Transportation declared the bridge "structurally deficient and functionally obsolete." The lions were removed from the bridge in 2005 prior to the restoration work beginning and returned in 2011.
