Little Boat Ride

The fall weather has been great this year with warm weather and blue skys. I had the opportunity to get a ride on the Intracoastal Waterway and jumped at the opportunity. Small boats can be launched at the Salt Run ramp close to the Lighthouse. It's a short run down Salt Run to the inlet and east to the Atlantic Ocean or west to Saint Augustine. The tide was changing and there was considerable current in the inlet where we passed a shrimpboat. Downtown Saint Augustine was a photo opportunity with lots of boats moored south of the Old Fort. Many larger boats and yachts are heading south for the winter and are utilizing the City Marina and the new mooring balls the city has installed. Next under the Bridge of Lions and south keeping the red marker bouys on the right. This could take us all the way to Key West if we were so inclined. Real estate is in high demand along this senic waterway and even the birds must compete for space. A few miles south and we arrive at the 206 Bridge. Time to turn around and head back to Saint Augustine.

Beach Surprise

Living in St. Augustine gives us access to miles of wonderful sandy beaches most of which are "driveable". We were enjoying a simply awesome late fall day at the beach when to our surprise there suddenly appeared a convoy made up of one truck, several cars, and a camper. We watched as the truck sporting what appeared to be a boom camera proceeded south on the beach filming a new Mercedes car. As the sun was setting they zipped back and forth several times using two different Mercedes cars always accompanied by local police with lights flashing. It is with great pride that we report that our first class beaches were the sight of filming by a first class automobile company.

The Great Pumpkin

The Great Pumpkin has come and gone and the little people are ready to go back to school loaded with excitement and sugar in their veins. Always fun to see how much the neighborhood children have grown and what costumes they chose to wear. Just maybe their costume choice is an insight as to what occupation they will pursue in later life. Perhaps grandson Luke aspires to become a wall street ponzi scheaming financeer while grandson Fisher was chosen to become a travel agent. Grandaughter Audriana on the other hand may make a great real estate agent. She is smart, industrious, likes people, is kind and caring and will not let me get away with anything.

Soccer Game

We look foreward to grandson Luke's weekly soccer game. This is his first year on a team and he has made quite an improvement. Last week he scored two goals and just missed a third. The coach teaches fundamentals and stresses sportsmanship. Kids learn to play positions and how to work together. His team is part of the Ancient City Soccer Club http://www.ancientcitysoccer.com/index.html and provides a recreational program for kids from four to eighteen.

A Beautiful Sunset

Aunt Kates is a recent addition to the St. Augustine restaurant scene. It is located North of Vilano Beavh and sits directly on the intracoastal waterway. Offering a mostly seafood menue it is sited in a grove of live oaks. you may choose to dine on the outside decks under the trees or inside in the main dining room.

The ever-changing sunsets are spectacular as this picture shows. From your outside table you may view wading birds feeding along the shoreline, fishermen casting their lines from shore, and occasionally you may site a manatee or dolphin. Boats cruise up and down the waterway and may tie up at Aunt Kates floating dock. Be sure to try out this new restaurant on your next visit to the area.

We went to Summer Camp in the North Carolina Mountians for a brief and very pleasant interlude from our normally busy scheduals. The cooler weather allows you to enjoy outside activities like golf, hiking, tennis without the normal perspiration of the Florida summer. Barbara worked on her golf swing and was able to increase her distance from the tee considerably. She also developed a very accurate pitch shot which also helped to lower her score. If she doesn't slow down I will be forced to take lessons. I worked on my golf cart driving skills on what was once touted as the highest altitude golf course east of the Mississippi. The course is just shy of a mile high with the ability to see three states from several points. Vacations are fun and all too short.

Kids of all ages love a rousing round of miniature golf. Luke's favorite is the Fiesta Falls Miniature Golf at 818 A1A Beach Boulevard in St. Augustine Beach. He likes the 65 ft. Old Spanish Ship replica. His grandparents like the landscaped 18-hole course with 8 waterfalls, caves, and a view of the ocean from the gazebo. We all like the soft ice cream, milk shakes and other tasty treats available on site. The course is open every day and evening weather permitting and is lighted for night play. Call 904-461-5571 or 1-800-356-0335 for rates and hours.

School's Out, Surf's Up

What could be better for a guy just completing his first year of formal schooling. You are on summer vacation and the surf is just right for guys your size. You see all the big kids standing up on their boards and even though you are not riding a "real" board you give it a try. Success!!! Let's do that move again, and again, and again. Ha papa, where's your camera? Grandson Luke is not ready to go back to school just yet unless maybe it's Surf Camp School. Try www.blueskysurfshop.com/report/ for live surf conditions in our area.

New Arrival

Our son Max and wife Sarah are the proud parents of their first child Fisher. Fisher was born Monday June 6 at 10:18 A.M. His birth weight was five pounds fifteen ounces and he is eighteen inches long. I wonder when he will be ready for a surf board, mountain bike, and a pair of snow skis. Maybe by the time he has his first birthday party or so. Sure is cute!!! What's with the hat and blanket Fisher, this is summer in Florida.

The Lions Are Back

Our wonderful lions are again standing guard over the Bridge of Lions. Given as a gift of Dr. Andrew Anderson (1839-1924)these Medici statues are copies of those found in the Loggia dei Land in Florence, Italy. The lions reference the name "Leon" in Ponce De Leon, which means "Lion" in Spanish. Begun in 1925 and completed in 1927 the Bridge of Lions is a bascule bridge that spans the Intracoastal Waterway. In 1999 the Department of Transportation declared the bridge "structurally deficient and functionally obsolete." The lions were removed from the bridge in 2005 prior to the restoration work beginning and returned in 2011.

Pool Weather

This is a picture of our youngest granddaughter, Audrianna, relaxing in her "boat" in our community pool. The April weather here in St. Augustine has been just magnificent. Most,if not all, of our community pools are not heated (too expensive) so we anxiously await weather warm enough to up the water temperature. We are happy to report that not only could our spring breakers enjoy the beach but also the pool!!

South Beach Grill

One of our favorite places to unwind, after a long fun day of showing property, is the South Beach Grill. Located just south of state route 206 on A1A it is convenient with tons of atmosphere. The kids can play in the sand while their food is being prepared. Barbara loves the Breaker's Salad with blackened shrimp. I have a hard time deciding between the fried shrimp, a seafood special with the beans and rice, or a bowl of chowder and a wrap. Don't forget South Beach Grill's own hot sauce which can be purchased to take home. For a peek at their menu click here.http://www.southbeachgrill.net/.

Ocean Palms at St. Augustine Beach is a single family home community with a great island location nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. Homes are placed well back from historic beach highway A1A with most overlooking freshwater lakes or nature preserve settings. In fact, over 40 acres of the subdivision is a dedicated conservation area. It is not uncommon to see deer, raccoon, a variety of birds in or coming from the preserve or an occasional porpoise or manatee off the community fishing pier. Ocean Palms is designed to be truly pedestrian friendly, featuring a complete sidewalk system throughout the entire community. You can easily walk to all the community amenities such as the central community park and swimming pool, the river park and Intracoastal fishing and viewing pier, plus the beach is only two blocks from the community entrance via a dedicated beach walkway. Areas within Ocean Palms are dedicated to different styles of homes. Custom homes abut the Matanzas River / ICW and have their own piers and boat docks. Single family homes make up the bulk of the residences and require the homeowner to do or contract for their individual lawn and landscaping. Patio homes are individual homes on generally smaller lots with an association that handles lawn and landscaping issues for a monthly fee. Single family and Patio homes were all built by Palmetto Homes of St. Augustine and feature high security concrete block construction. All are deed restricted with an active association.

First T-Ball Game

Our youngest grandson, Luke, age 6 had his first t-ball game this past Saturday. It was a laugh a minute for the parents and grandparents. Just the concept of hitting the ball, then what to do with the bat, running to where? and not picking up the ball they just hit was too cute. Once they were in the outfield and a ball came their way it was a 10 person pile up----all trying to come up with THE BALL. These games will be twice a week thru May so we expect to have many laughs and lots of picture perfect moments.

Winter Fun

We just returned from our annual ski trip to Beech Mountain, NC. This is Terry at the top of Beech preparing to take a run down the most difficult trail. The web site at www.skibeech.com has lots of information e.g. ticket prices, lessons, and most importantly under the mountain heading you can pull up various web cams to see the current conditions. Beech is approximately a nine hour drive from St. Augustine and is also reachable by plane into either Charlotte, NC or Tri City airport in Johnson City, Tenn.

New Years

The 5th annual Beach Blast Off held last evening at the St. Augustine Beach pier and pavilion was a hugh success. The free event featured 14 restaurants participating in a chili cook-off, ice sculpting demonstrations, Kid Zone, local food vendors and a magnificent fire works display. Net proceeds from all the Beach Blast Off events go back into the area in the form of shade pavilions and picnic benches for Splash Park. Last years net of $21,000 will be combined with this year's to fund a grant request for fitness trails and workout stations throughout St. Augustine Beach. If you missed this years event put next years on your "to do" list. Happy New Year!
